Everything I Learned Unclogging a Patio Drain with a Water Jet
There's a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from fixing something you can't see. No before-and-after photos that really capture it, no dramatic reveal just the quiet, deeply personal joy of watching water disappear where it's supposed to instead of pooling where it isn't.
That was my weekend with the patio drain.
The Problem
It started small, the way these things always do. A little puddle after rain that lingered a bit too long. Then a bit longer. Then, after a few storms, the patio was holding water like a very shallow, very unglamorous koi pond. The drain was clearly still there I could see the grate but whatever was supposed to be happening underneath it had stopped happening entirely.
Common suspects for a clogged patio drain:
- Leaves and organic debris that break down into a dense sludge
- Dirt and silt that wash in over seasons and settle
- Roots creeping in through old pipe joints
- Just plain old collapsed or crushed sections of pipe
I was hoping for the first two. Much less fun to discover the last one.
Bringing in the Water Jet
Rather than snake it and hope for the best, I went with a water jet — basically a pressure washer attachment that runs a hose down the drain line and blasts a rotating spray of high-pressure water forward and backward as it goes. It's the same basic idea plumbers use, scaled down for a homeowner to rent or buy.
The process, in practice:
- Clear the surface debris first. No point jetting a line if the grate itself is buried in leaves and grit.
- Feed the hose in slowly. Going too fast just means you miss whatever's clogging things up further down.
- Let the nozzle do the work on the way back out, not just on the way in the backward-facing jets are what actually scour the pipe walls.
- Flush with a garden hose after to confirm water's actually flowing, not just that the jet made it through.
The first ten feet were easy the hose glided through without much resistance. Then it hit something with a very satisfying thunk, and a few passes back and forth later, I felt the resistance give way. A rush of dark, silty water came back up through the grate, which is either the least glamorous or most glamorous moment of a home improvement weekend, depending on your tolerance for muck.
The Result
Ran the garden hose down the drain afterward and watched it disappear on cue. No backup, no gurgling, no standing water. Whatever had been building up down there — my money's on a few seasons of compacted leaf sludge — was gone.
A Few Things I'd Tell Past Me
- Don't underestimate how far debris travels. The clog was much farther down the line than I expected based on where the water was pooling.
- A water jet is loud and messy — plan for both. Tarp the area if you care about the patio surface, and expect the runoff to look genuinely disgusting.
- This is a once-every-few-years job, not a one-and-done. I'll probably run the jet through again preventatively before it backs up next time.
If you've got a slow patio or yard drain that's been quietly annoying you, a water jet is one of those tools that makes an invisible, tedious problem satisfyingly visible for about five minutes — right before it disappears down the pipe for good.
